In a stunning and surprising match, Important Internet Spaceship League (IISL) managed to turn what looked like an initial wipe-out into a last minute stand off between their Tengus and several Laconian Syndicate (LACON) battlecruisers, ending in a shocking victory for IISL's one remaining Tengu on the field.
The Match began with both teams spread out into elements in the centre of the arena, and smaller groups spread further out. Omarvelous, IISL's team captain, justified this approach for them: "We thought it was important to have our support tackle ships at the front line to deal the important damage to Laconian's support ships."
This approach turned very sour however, as in the first few moments of the match, IISL's Assault ships in the centre of the arena were swiftly eliminated by LACON. IISL was not without hope yet however, as their initial tactic of attacking LACON's support ships bore fruit in the form of a Rook kill early on in the match.
LACON, however, moved on to attack IISL's three command ships, destroying their Sleipnir and Absolution. Just as things began to look ever increasingly worse for IISL, they managed to eliminate LACON's logistics scimitar before losing their last command ship, a Nighthawk.
LACON's loss proved somewhat vital, however, as their last support ships, a Rook and a Huginn, were finally eliminated by IISL. Omarvelous states: "I think the turning point was when we finally killed off their support - especially when the last rook and huggin went down."
The battle now entered what would turn out to be it's most vital and unexpected turn of events. LACON's remaining battlecruisers now moved to eliminate IISL's two remaining Tengu's. The first Tengu fell, and victory looked to be in the hands of LACON.
Vaden Khale, who was LACON's Fleet Commander for the "majority" of the fight, stated a vital weakness in his teams setup: "[Capacitor], especially for Amarr ships, is the lifeblood. We were all drained dry by the end of the match, and could not even fire our weapons or MWDs. If we had had a single capacitor booster, the Tengu would have fallen."
The Tengu - piloted by Kanakawa - did not fall, however, and proceeded to shockingly eliminate the entirety of LACON's remaining battlecruisers by itself, leading IISL to what could be the 7th Alliance Tournament's most surprising and exciting victory yet.
Omarvelous commented on the victory as "one of the most IMPORTANT moments in tournament history, and marks the dawning of a new age of prolific [Tech 3] PVP.", while Vaden Khale was less optimistic about the Tengu's role in his team's defeat, stating: "The outcome of the match would have been won in our favor if we had included capacitor boosters in our tactical package. The choice for pure shield buffer cost us the match, in my opinion."
